oin NRA Advanced Instructor Jim Benoit for a comprehensive introductory class on defensive shooting. This course is designed for men and women with little to no shooting experience who want to build safe, reliable handgun skills. Some prior range time is helpful but not required — all you need is a willingness to learn.
We’ll start with the fundamentals to ensure every student is on track. You’ll refine your grip, stance, and sight picture, then apply them on the range through live-fire drills. Students will:
-
Practice safe muzzle discipline and trigger control
-
Learn proper trigger reset for accuracy
-
Shoot multiple targets with increasing confidence
-
Discuss core defensive topics including Use of Force, Grip, Stance, Draw, and Shot Placement
This class is conducted in a small, supportive environment with plenty of personal attention. You’ll leave with stronger skills, greater confidence, and the foundation to continue your defensive training journey.
👉 Reminder: If you can already safely handle your firearm and shoot accurately, you may be ready for Defensive Carry 1.0, where students work from the holster and train with more advanced defensive drills.

This is not a beginner class. Students must already demonstrate safe gun handling and consistent accuracy before enrolling. If you are new to handguns or not yet confident in your skills, we recommend starting with our Intro to Defensive Pistol course.
Defensive Carry 1.0 builds the critical foundation for carrying and employing a handgun responsibly in a violent encounter. Designed for shooters with some experience—whether open or concealed carry from outside the waistband—this course pushes beyond the basics and develops your ability to respond effectively under stress.
We start with a dynamic classroom session covering mindset, use of force, and essential fundamentals. Then, we move directly to the range for fast-paced, practical drills. You will:
- Learn and refine a proper draw from the holster
- Work from the holster throughout the class for realistic carry training
- Develop shot placement for decisive threat engagement
- Perform fighting and tactical magazine reloads
- Engage multiple targets while maintaining strict muzzle discipline
- Practice trigger reset for speed and accuracy
- Incorporate movement while shooting to stay in the fight
Upon successful completion, students are eligible for the Florida Out-of-State Carry Permit. This course is also recognized for concealed carry certification in Delaware.
