Historic 1932 Railway Mail Service .38 S&W Revolver – Rare Survivor
Manufactured in 1932, this .38 S&W revolver is a rare and authentic piece of American postal and law enforcement history. It bears markings linked to the legendary Railway Mail Service (RMS)—a vital arm of the U.S. Post Office that once moved the nation’s mail with unmatched speed and precision. RMS clerks worked aboard high-speed railcars, sorting mail en route and executing daring mail exchanges without the train ever stopping.
But this was no ordinary desk job—RMS clerks often transported large sums of cash and even escorted federal gold shipments. Armed robbery was a real threat, which made arming clerks with sidearms like this one essential.
While thousands of clerks rode the rails armed, most RMS-issued revolvers were destroyed after retirement, making surviving examples like this increasingly scarce.
This revolver features fixed blade and notch sights and is fitted with checkered medallion grips. In excellent condition, it retains 95%+ of the original finish, with only minimal spotting on the side and butt strap. Mechanically flawless—tight lockup and perfect timing.
A standout collector’s piece that tells the story of a bygone era of American grit, duty, and precision.
